That there is a boob on Twitter might not sound like breaking news, but an image of the human mammary glands has gone viral over the past 24 hours, and it’s unlikely you’ve ever seen a pair of breasts from this perspective before.
The picture shows a diagram of the female muscle system, and includes the flower-like arrangement of milk ducts that are found beneath the nipples. And given that nothing causes excitement quite like a human breast, Twitter users have been left suitably scandalized by this wonderfully natural – yet rarely seen – sight.
As several commenters have pointed out, most science textbooks only show the male muscular system, which is why this image seems so unfamiliar and striking.
Some Twitter users have reacted with a completely ridiculous disgust, despite the fact that half of the world’s population has breasts, and that without the help of these glands none of us would have ever made the transition to solid foods.
Others have responded with awe at the intricate beauty of the female anatomy.
The human breast is made up mostly of adipose tissue, within which are found around 15 to 20 lobes of glandular tissue, arranged in a floral formation. Each of these lobes consists of many smaller structures called lobules, which themselves contain tiny bulbs that produce milk.
The tubes connecting these lobes and lobules are called ducts, and carry the milk to the nipple.
So, now you know.
