Facebook Will Crack Down on Anti-Vaccine Content

As Clark County, Washington, combats an ongoing measles outbreak, Facebook announced Thursday that it’s diminishing the reach of anti-vaccine information on its platform. It will no longer allow it to be promoted through ads or recommendations, and will make it less prominent in search results. The social network will not take down anti-vaccine posts entirely, however. The company also said it was exploring ways to give users more context about vaccines from “expert organizations.” The decision was widely anticipated: Facebook, along with YouTube and Amazon, has faced criticism from journalists and lawmakers in recent weeks for allowing vaccine misinformation to flourish on their sites. Facebook also told media outlets in February that it was looking into how it should address …

Molecule Found In Spider Venom Could Soon Be Used To Treat Erectile Dysfunction

There’s a species of spider in Brazil whose dangerous bite can have a peculiar side effect. It induces priapism, otherwise known as abnormally long erections. Given the success of erectile dysfunction drugs, you can imagine just how much interest there is in harnessing the wandering spider’s bizarre venom. A new paper, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, details the effects of a synthetic version of the venom’s active ingredient, known as PnPP-19, in animal models suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. The researchers found that the compound was successful in creating erections in mice without causing any adverse side effects. The venom had previously been shown to work in rats that suffered injuries to their cavernous nerves, which facilitate both …

How to make your cervical test more comfortable

“Ideally, you would arrange it for somewhere in the middle of your cycle or towards the end of your cycle.” Dr Kaye adds the test itself might cause some pain similar to menstrual cramps, “but that lasts maximum 30 seconds, and then it’s gone”. Wear comfortable clothes The doctor or nurse taking the test needs you to be relaxed when taking the test – so make sure you’re comfortable. “Maybe you want to wear a skirt, so that we can lift that up and you still feel more covered – as opposed to taking off leggings or jeans,” says Dr Kaye. Ask for a woman to do the test If you’re more comfortable with a female doctor or nurse doing …

The last axe has fallen… Khloe Kardashian has unfollowed Tristan Thompson on Instagram, and has now totally changed her tune on Twitter after initially defending him for allegedly cheating on her following Jordyn Woods‘ interview on Red Table Talk. On Saturday morning, the momma completely turned the tables, after initially calling out the 21-year-old for breaking up her family yesterday, she’s now putting the blame on her ex-BF for his alleged cheating: This has been an awful week & I know everyone is sick of hearing about it all (as am I). I’m a rollercoaster of emotions & have said things I shouldn’t have. Honestly, Tristan cheating on me & humiliating me, wasn’t such a shock as the first time. …

Was Luke Perry too young for a stroke? No, they can happen at any age

(CNN)The death of Luke Perry, after the actor suffered what his publicist said was a massive stroke, is evidence that the disease can affect people of any age, the American Heart Association said. Ischemic strokes account for 87% of all stroke cases. They occur when a blood vessel becomes blocked by fatty deposits and blood has trouble passing through to the brain. Other types of strokes include thrombotic ischemic stroke — triggered by a blocked vessel — and a hemorrhagic stroke, caused by weakened blood vessels that rupture and bleed into the brain. The cause and type of Perry’s stroke has not been revealed. But Elkind said it’s important to know risk factors and symptoms. The risk factors Stroke is …

Trump’s legacy: conservative judges who will dominate US law for decades

Senate Republicans have confirmed 89 Trump-nominated judges, far in excess of appointments under Obama and Bush past ties to an anti-LGBT group and who at 37 years old is the countrys youngest federal judge, a lifetime appointment. As with previous Trump nominees, Readler, Murphy and Rushing were confirmed over the impassioned protests of progressive groups who warned the judges were out of step with the country on crucial issues including immigration, abortion, climate change, LGBT rights, healthcare, voting rights and more. The overarching concern, said Daniel L Goldberg, the legal director at the Alliance For Justice, is that Trumps judges will now shape American life according to the narrow conservative vision of the elite, predominantly white and male groups guiding …

Experience: I didnt hit puberty until I was 19

It was assumed I was just a late bloomer, but the longer it went on, the more my confidence suffered As a kid, I was always small and never as strong as my peers, but what set me apart was that I had no sense of smell. At school, if somebody farted in class, I would be the only person who remained oblivious. Consequently, I always got the blame. Knowing something wasnt right, I told my mother, but she was working her guts out single-handedly to support three children. Because of my size, I was bullied almost daily. I went to a weight-training class and I could barely lift more than the bar. I enjoyed baseball and football, but lacked …

Many Adults In The US Need A Revaccination To Be Protected From Measles

With measles cases flaring up in many parts of the world, including the US, more people are becoming sharply aware of the importance of vaccinations. However, it’s important to note that some vaccinated adults in the US – namely those who received a measles shot in the ’60s – might still be at risk of illness and may require revaccination. Here’s everything you need to know. The measles vaccine was introduced to the US in 1963. One early incarnation of the shot, called KMV, introduced a dead inactivated measles virus into the body. Just like other vaccines, it was designed to spark up the immune system to produce antibodies against measles, thereby protecting them from the disease. However, the KMV dead virus …

A Good Night’s Sleep Helps Your Brain Fix Damaged DNA

It seems strange that animals, us included, spend so much time vulnerably curled up with their eyes shut, totally unaware of our surroundings. While we might aim to get a solid eight hours in, giant armadillos sleep for 18 hours a day, while koalas snooze for an impressive 22 hours. So why did this bizarre behavior – which turns an alert animal into easy prey – evolve? Sleep has all sorts of benefits, from reducing stress and improving your memory to reducing your risk of heart disease. Now, scientists at Bar-Ilan University in Israel have uncovered yet another crucial benefit of getting some Zs – it helps your body repair damaged DNA. To conduct their study, the team turned to …

In scathing ruling, judge rips insurer for putting ‘bottom line’ over patients’ health

(CNN)In a scathing decision, a federal judge blasted a subsidiary of the nation’s largest insurance company for focusing on the “bottom line as much or more” than patients’ health, saying the insurer illegally denied treatment to thousands of people. The judge also slammed the company’s medical directors for being “deceptive” under oath. Patrick Kennedy, the former US representative from Rhode Island who has long championed mental health issues, called the ruling “breathtaking” in its scope. For the mental health community, he equated it to the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision that found racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. “This ruling is the Brown v. Board of Education for the mental health movement,” Kennedy said. “The insurance industry is hellbent on …

Scientists May Have Discovered A New Orca Species

Now they have. Paul Tixier/CEBC CNRS/MNHN Paris via AP This undated photo provided by Paul Tixier in March 2019 shows a Type D killer whale. Scientists are waiting for test results from a tissue sample, which could give them the DNA evidence to prove the new type is a distinct species. (Paul Tixier/CEBC CNRS/MNHN Paris via AP) “This is the most different looking killer whale I’ve ever seen,” said Robert Pitman, a NOAA marine ecologist in San Diego. He was part of the team that spotted the orcas off Cape Horn at the tip of South America. They likely mostly eat fish, not marine mammals like seals, as other killer whales do, Pitman said. Fishermen have complained about how good …

Why Chinese Companies Plug a US Test for Facial Recognition

Last year, Chinese police arrested a man at a pop concert after he was flagged as a criminal suspect by a facial recognition system installed at the venue. The software that called the cops was developed by Shanghai startup Yitu Tech. It was marketed with a stamp of approval from the US government. Yitu is a top performer on a testing program run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology that’s vital to the fast-growing facial recognition industry. More than 60 companies took part in the most recent rounds of testing. The rankings are dominated by entrants from Russia and China, where governments are bullish about facial recognition and relatively unconcerned about privacy. “It’s considered the industry standard and …
