Would you be happy to see your doctor online?

Doug Sweeny, from US primary care provider One Medical, says giving doctors the flexibility to work remotely greatly improves their quality of life. “The virtual team, they may have kids at home, they may be in places like Hawaii,” he says. “It works brilliantly, it actually helps if you need a flexible schedule or are in an area [where] we don’t have bricks and mortar.” Quality of life is one thing, but telemedicine is also about hard-headed economics. Many black pupils’ education ‘dumbed down’

Prof Steve Strand analysed data on six million children in England’s schools between 2005 and 2016. Social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) are a type of special educational needs that covers support with mental health problems and challenging behaviour. Motor maintenance Challenging behaviour is a big factor in pupil exclusions and shifts to alternative provision. Prof Strand said: “Black Caribbean children may be suffering an inappropriate and narrowed curriculum, from unwarranted over-identification, particularly [in] secondary schools. “This might mean they get less academically challenging, more vocationally orientated work perhaps,” he said, “like being shifted from maths to motor maintenance, or experience a lowered expectation of what they can do. “From the factors that we have measured – socio-economic background, …

The World’s Insects Are On The Verge Of A “Catastrophic Collapse”

The world’s insects are heading towards a “catastrophic collapse” – and if the insects go, it’s bad news for the rest of us. The worldwide decline of insects has been detailed in a major new meta-analysis published in the journal Biological Conservation that has reviewed 73 historical long-term reports of insect declines from across the globe, most of which happened to be carried out on populations in Europe and the US. They concluded that up to 40 percent of the world’s insect species could face extinction within the coming decades. This is especially jarring when you consider their essential role in the wider ecosystem as pollinators, let alone the fact they make up around two-thirds of all land-dwelling species on the planet. “If insect species losses …

Genetically Modified Super-Charged Cassava Could Help Stamp Out Malnourishment In Africa

Over 800 million people depend on cassava as a main food staple. Also known as manioc and yuca, this root vegetable also makes up around 50 percent of the caloric intake of around one-third of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately, it isn’t the most nutritious of food sources. As a result, iron and zinc deficiencies are sky high in many parts of Africa. It’s estimated that up to 75 percent of preschool children and 67 percent of pregnant women in Nigeria are anemic as a result of iron deficiency. However, researchers have now developed super-charged cassavas using genetic engineering to enrich the plant with significantly higher levels of both iron and zinc. Reporting in the journal Nature, scientists at the …
