The dust has finally settled on Tesla CEO Elon Musk's battle with the SEC, LA is under quarantine, and the US is falling behind in SIM-swap hacking. Here's the news you need to know in two minutes or less.
Elon Musk is getting a stricter Twitter-sitter
Musk and the SEC have reached a settlement in their court clash over his tweets. The Twitter kerfuffle stems from an incident when the agency asked a federal judge to hold Musk in contempt of court for violating an agreement that a Tesla lawyer would pre-approve all of his written communications—including tweets. Now, Musk and the SEC set stricter and more specific terms for Musk’s official Twitter babysitter, namely that it would be “an experienced securities lawyer employed by the Company.”
LA turns to quarantining during measles scare
Hardly anyone in Los Angeles has the measles, but a person infected with the disease passed through the University of California, Los Angeles. Given that the measles is one of the most dangerous and infectious diseases humans can get, LA's Department of Public Health is guarding against an outbreak by quarantining hundreds of people who may have come into contact with the virus.
The US is falling behind on stopping SIM-swap hacking
You know that verification text you sometimes get to log in to your accounts? It's not always safe. Hackers have been known to trick or bribe a phone company employee into switching the SIM card associated with a victim's phone number. The hackers then use that one-time password sent by text after stealing say, your banking credentials, or by using the phone number as a password reset fallback. Phone carriers from countries like Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa have provided a remedy for this kind of hack, but the US hasn't. What gives?
Do you know what a troll is? How exactly would you define it? "Trolls can be white male misogynists leaking celebrity nudes, and they can be teenage girls who really, really like Nicki Minaj and will subtweet you into algorithmic oblivion if you disagree. They can also be 'virtuous trolls' making once-hateful corners of the internet hostile only to the haters," says our writer. It seems like a fickle thing, but without a clear definition it becomes hard to distinguish teasing from hate speech.
