Boris Johnson Suffers Major Defeat As Conservative MPs Stall No-Deal Brexit

Boris Johnson suffered a major defeat Tuesday evening as conservative members of Parliament against a no-deal The government lost the vote by 328-301, in a huge blow for the new prime minister, who threatened Tory MPs with Opposition MPs now have the opportunity to pass a new law that stops Johnson from wrenching the U.K. from the European Union without a deal on Oct. 31. Johnson has been widely criticized over his decision to shut down Parliament for five weeks as the U.K. hurtles towards the Halloween deadline. If passed, the legislation ― which will be tabled by the Labour Party on Wednesday ― would force Johnson to seek a delay to Brexit unless MPs back a deal or no-deal …

They wanted to be K-pop stars. Instead, these Brazilian women were forced into prostitution, police say

Seoul (CNN)A group of Brazilian women who traveled to South Korea hoping to join its multibillion-dollar K-pop industry instead found themselves trafficked into prostitution, according to South Korean police. But once they arrived in South Korea, it was a different story. The women’s passports were allegedly taken from them, and they were locked in two houses in Ilsan and Paju, two cities north of Seoul. They were then allegedly sold to a massage parlor for 2 million won ($1,650) each, police said. Police were tipped off to their situation last month, after a Brazilian woman called her embassy in South Korea asking to be rescued. Officers then raided a massage parlor in Ilsan, where they rescued three Brazilian women.

Brain Organoids Grown In Lab Show Neural Activity Similar To Preterm Infants

Brain blobs the size of a pea have begun to show signs of neural activity similar to those of preterm infants. The team say this is an “unprecedented” level of brain waves seen in vitro.  “Never in the history of science has anyone shown brain cells firing and connecting such as we have seen with our organoids. So, there was no precedent to compare,” lead author Alysson Muotri told IFLScience.  “I was very skeptical when I saw the results. Like many neuroscientists, I had the wrong assumption that an artificially made human brain organoid would never reach this level of sophistication. This is mainly because brain organoids do not have all cell types, do not have all brain regions, are not vascularized, …

Why dont doctors trust women? Because they dont know much about us | Gabrielle Jackson

The medical community have known for a century that women are living in constant pain. Theyve done nothing about it Its frustrating to have questions that dont get answered. Its altogether disturbing to find out that those questions havent even been asked. When I was diagnosed with endometriosis at age 23, I didnt know enough to ask the right questions. I assumed my gynaecologist had all the answers, and listened carefully to his thoughtful explanations. I thought I knew it all. Or at least that he knew it all. But I was wrong. It was only after more than a decade of feeling weak, second-rate, wimpy and affect at least 50 million US women alone. I discovered that some of …

Radioactive equipment stolen from Colorado construction site, officials say

A portable moisture-density gauge and case similar to one reported stolen on Monday in Colorado. (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment) The stolen gauge contains small amounts of cesium-137 and americium-241, and is used to make measurements by projecting the radiation from the two radioactive sources into the ground and then providing a measurement on the top face of the instrument. “As long as the radioactive sources are in the shielded position, the gauge would not present a hazard to the public,” the agency states. “However, any attempt to tamper with the radioactive sources or handle unshielded sources outside their container could subject the person handling to radiation exposure.” NASA ASTRONAUT SPOUSE’S FAMILY CLAIMS THEY WERE ‘FRIGHTENED’ BY DEMANDS …

Sorry, Pats fans, Gronkowski isn’t making a comeback. He’s hawking CBD oil

(CNN)Sorry, New England Patriots fans. That long-awaited announcement from your beloved former tight end had nothing to do with a comeback. In an Abacus statement, Gronkowski, 30, said he suffered numerous injuries and underwent nine surgeries during his nine seasons catching bullets from Tom Brady. “I was in near constant pain and needed to make a change,” he said. “These products have helped me safely manage pain better than anything else I’ve tried.” Proponents of CBD products say they can help athletes with pain, inflammation and even traumatic brain injuries, but because of CBD’s close relationship with its cousin, THC — the psychoactive drug in cannabis — CBD has seen itself banned in many pro sports venues. Unlike THC, however, …

A life in which nothing could hurt would be one in which nothing could matter We live, or so were constantly informed, in the era of the Sensitive Snowflake, the twentysomething university student who cant hear a vaguely challenging opinion without melting into a puddle of panic. What is there to salvage in an agency that exists solely to hunt, catalogue and detain the most vulnerable among us? Ices violence is as systematic as it is cruel This summer, a drink out of toilets and children third countries to endless backlogs and convoluted legal processes. The plea is commendable. But where are we as a society if we cannot dream bigger? What does it mean that some of our most beloved writers who have laboriously envisioned new and radical worlds didnt imagine a future that respects the right to human movement? The writer and political theorist Mark Fisher spoke to the stagnation of our political imagination through what he called capitalist realism. The concept, he wrote, is …
